Celebrating National Book Lovers Day
National Book Lovers Day is a reminder of the incredible journeys we embark on every time we open a book. Over the last few years, I’ve been lucky enough to discover stories that have stayed with me – some thrilling, some heartwarming, others deeply thought-provoking. To celebrate, here are my top 11 fiction books that have truly captured my imagination and heart.
1. The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber
Stephanie Garber’s enchanting storytelling shines in this magical sequel, seamlessly blending fantasy and adventure with a heartfelt tale of friendship and hope. It’s impossible not to get lost in the vivid world she creates. The Ballad of Never After is the second book in the Once Upon a Broken Heart trilogy – and it became my favorite of the three. It’s truly one of my favourite romantasy series to date.

2. The Last Murder at the End of the World by Stuart Turton
A masterful blend of mystery and suspense, Stuart Turton’s novel kept me on the edge of my seat with its clever twists and unique setting. It’s a fresh take on the murder mystery genre that I simply couldn’t put down. Although it’s quite different from the fantasy and romance books I usually read, it was such a fun and refreshing change. I don’t often read murder mysteries or whodunnits because I’m rarely satisfied with the endings – but this book was truly amazing.

3. The Woman in the Photograph by Stephanie Butland
This intimate and moving novel beautifully explores the power of memory and identity through a carefully crafted story. Butland’s subtle prose and emotional depth make it truly unforgettable. As a photographer, the mention of “photography” caught my eye and prompted me to give it a try – and I’m so glad I did. It’s also a brilliant and thought-provoking book about feminism.

4. Everything You Ever Wanted by Luiza Sauma
A heartfelt narrative about family, dreams, and the sacrifices we make, Sauma’s storytelling is both honest and compassionate, making this book deeply meaningful. It’s my all-time favourite – simply brilliant. I loved every moment of reading it, and I’ll never hesitate to recommend it to anyone who asks – or even to those who don’t.

5. We Spread by Iain Reid
If I could forget one book to enjoy it all over again, I'd pick this one: This chilling and atmospheric story is the perfect blend of psychological thriller and horror. Reid's sharp, unsettling writing creates a tense and immersive experience. We Spread was truly fascinating – told from the perspective of an elderly woman with dementia, it leaves you wondering: is the horror real, or all in her mind?

6. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
A delightful and touching novel that blends mystery with warmth and humor. Van Pelt’s unique storytelling — including the perspective of a giant Pacific octopus — brought a fresh and memorable voice to contemporary fiction.

7. The End of Men by Christina Sweeney-Baird
A provocative and timely dystopian novel that explores gender and societal change. Sweeney-Baird’s bold narrative challenges assumptions and offers a gripping, thought-provoking read. It’s like imagining if COVID-19 had only affected men—but in a far deadlier way.

8. After Paris by Nicole Kennedy
This powerful historical fiction novel captures the aftermath of war and the resilience of the human spirit. Kennedy’s vivid characters and rich setting transport you to a transformative moment in history.

9. When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill
A beautifully imaginative and feminist tale that redefines the boundaries of fantasy and reality. Barnhill’s lyrical prose and fierce storytelling make this a standout book that celebrates female power and rebellion.

10. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
This book is a favourite of mine — and honestly, anything by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a must-read. The glamorous yet deeply human story of Evelyn Hugo explores love, ambition, and identity with stunning emotional complexity.

11. Medusa by Jessie Burton
Jessie Burton’s atmospheric writing and richly layered narrative shine in Medusa, a haunting story that weaves myth and history with compelling characters and unexpected twists. I devoured this little book in hours. It was a lovely take on Medusa's story.

These eleven books have each given me something special – whether it’s escapism, insight, or simply the joy of a great story. If you’re looking for your next read, I hope this list inspires you to dive into a new world. Happy National Book Lovers Day – may your shelves be ever full and your pages ever turning!
